Let's help liberate today's woman

“I don’t need anyone to hold me, I can hold on to myself for I believe in myself.”

The 21st century woman is versatile as compared to the women of yesteryear in terms of managing varieties of tasks both inside and outside home. This is so because she’s self-reliant. She’s independent to make her own decisions. She does take suggestions from others but ultimately she does what she wants to do.

Self-reliance is the greatest of all virtues. It boosts the morale of an individual. Self-reliance takes root in an individual as the desired task is carried out in the way one wanted to do it. Financial independence for women has a great role to play in making them self-reliant. The conservative attitude of women staying within the four walls no longer has a place in today’s world of rocket science. Women are working as hardcore professionals on par with men. Avani Chaturvedi of the Indian Air Force recently was in the news for her solo flight of the jet plane MIG-21 Bison. She proved to the world that soaring heights is a child’s play for women. How can we forget Kalpana Chawla who brought laurels to our country being an astronaut in the NASA. Her humble village background and limited means of education were never a hurdle for her coz she had the fire in her to achieve something great. She is no more but her memories are evergreen in the hearts and minds of aspiring young pilots and astronauts. Move to the business sector we hear the names of Indra Nooyi and Sudha Murthy who head multi- national companies. Their upbringing in an orthodox family proved to be a great support for them in terms of values they pass onto the younger generation. Both of them developed financial independence by their self-reliance. It was their passion towards their work which has made them what they are today.

Sudha Murthy runs few NGO’s which work towards the empowerment of downtrodden people in the society. These NGO’s mainly focus on rural areas especially tribal areas guiding them to make themselves self-reliant by creating opportunities for them to make their living. Indra Nooyi is ranked as one of the richest women in the world. She could climb the ladder of this success because of her determination and belief in her own self. Empowerment doesn’t come only with an individualistic approach sometimes it’s a team which has proved that they are unmatched and unbeatable. The Mother’s Market at Manipur is the best example where thousands of stalls are  run by women selling everything from fruits and vegetables to colorful garments and handmade jewelry. Our government too is supporting women in all possible ways. In a step towards empowerment the Indian Railways has handed over the Gandhi Nagar station, Jaipur to an all women crew. Its operated by 28 self-reliant women who manage it extremely well. These women communicate a message to us that we must love and respect ourselves to such an extent that no circumstance can pull us down.

To gain financial independence it isn’t necessary to take up an office job which requires the whole day. To a great extent in India still, a family woman is preferred more than a working woman. That’s so because of the old existing traditions, customs and beliefs. There’s nothing wrong in it. But the increasing standards of living demand more of fiscal support from both the counterparts. Thanks to the technological advancements which help a woman to work from home as an online tutor or counselor. They have even portals which help them to promote their business being at home through various apps. This not only keeps them busy but also helps them gain financial independence by being able to generate the required revenue. This move automatically elevates the position of women in the family and the outer world giving them a unique identity. This WOMAN’S DAY why not give a thought to start something of your own which would etch out your personality in the most desirable and commendable way. Come on get going and prove to the world that sense of independence and security are the sweetest of all when clubbed with self-reliance.
