The Promise #Orange The World #16 days

She nurtured the seed lovingly

Keeping her womb warm and safe

Avoiding hazardous tasks

And eating well

She gave a head start to the life

Right in the womb

As she went about her tasks

Waiting for life to sprout

The wait gave way to ecstasy

As she heard the first cry

Tears of wonderment cascaded her eyes

As she held the miracle in her arms

In that instant

Two beings were born

The baby

And the mother

Twin births

That would promise unconditional love

To her offspring

She was hungry

But she fed her child

She was exhausted

But she cradled the baby

Her breasts became full with milk

And ached so

But she waited patiently

For the baby to drink her fill

She tended to the wet sheets

Waking up at night

Missing on her sleep

Nevertheless going to work the next morning

She carried bricks for a living

As the baby rested in a cloth pouch

Buying baubles and anklets

And dainty dresses

To adorn her princess

It was a commitment for life

And beyond life

For the offspring was not another entity

But an extension of her soul

So it was hardly surprising

That she promised the girl

A lifetime of bubbling warmth

A guarantee of nurturing

A guarantee of loving

A promise

Like none other in the world

For she was

A Mother.
